When I was growing up in the small Cajun town of
St. Martinville, Louisiana, there were always dogs around. My father, like most of his friends, raised Labs and Beagles for hunting. The dogs were also my playmates and I adored them!
After studying Fine Art at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, I moved to New Orleans and started my family. That family has always included a variety of pets, from dogs and cats to fish, birds, even an iguana and Bearded Dragon named Ethel. My son Joe naturally grew up to become a veterinarian. And it was only natural that pet portraits would become my passion!
My life as a pet portraitist spanned twenty- two of the thirty years that I called New Orleans "home". Only after Hurricane Katrina changed our lives forever did my husband Jean and I choose a new path.
We chose to return to my home town of St. Martinville along with our four surviving pets. My family here helped us to regroup and start over and we are forever grateful to them and all of the people in St. Martinville for their continuing generosity and support. We will remain here and are settling into the Acadian way of life.
Moving here has not only changed our lives but has changed my artwork and painting technique! Other than pet portraits, my work also now includes Louisiana landscapes, such as swamps and sugar cane fields. I've started working in graphite again and am now doing people portraits in graphite and watercolor pencils.
I've also developed a new series of acrylics on canvas titled "Cow Belles". They're all painted in bright colors, derived from ice cream flavors, have sky blue eyelashes and/or red hooves. Sounds crazy but they're so fun! Please check out the "Cow Belles" page! Let me know what you think!
Everyone tells me that things happen for a reason. I've yet to imagine why something as devastating as Katrina should happen. All I know is that our lives have been changed forever and we're doing our best to make it for the better. Change is growth but only if we accept it and move forward.
Thanks for taking time to view my artwork. It defines me. It gives me purpose and keeps my life interesting.
